Refacing your cabinets can make your kitchen seem new again; at least until you pull out your old sagging cabinet drawers. Most families' cabinets drawers get heavy workouts as they're constantly opened and closed while stuffed full of items. If your kitchen cabinets are older, their drawer boxes and hardware may not have been the best quality even when new. Why not modernize your cabinets, drawers, and cabinet hardware while refacing your cabinets?

Upgrading Your Kitchen Cabinets, Drawers

There are a few ways you can upgrade your cabinets, drawers, and organizers while keeping costs in line. The parts you need are usually available at local cabinet shops. Many online retailers who specialize in cabinet parts also carry good selections. A few areas you may want to address:

  • Drawer Gliders--There have been big improvements in gliders over the years. Even with newer cabinets there can be a difference between the gliders on economical cabinets and those on more expensive models. For about $10 a drawer, you can replace your old gliders with new ball bearing gliders capable of supporting up to 100 pounds.
  • Drawer Boxes--Older boxes often begin to fall apart from wear and tear; new dovetailed boxes are available in woods such as poplar, maple, and even cherry. A 15-inch wide by 22-inch deep drawer that's 4-1/8 inches tall may be less than $40 in poplar or maple.
  • Organizers--Custom drawer organizers can be built for any purpose and usually start around $30 a drawer; find what you need when you need it.

Refacing your kitchen cabinets is a great opportunity to improve their function as well as their appearance.
