Choosing the right kitchen cabinet hardware is an essential part of any kitchen refacing job. After all, if you're going for a completely new style or look, or even keeping the same one you had before but getting rid of the wear and tear, you want the cabinet hardware to complement the changes you've made to the doors and drawer fronts. However, before you start browsing hardware stores for just the right handle or knob, here are some things to consider:
- What Look Do You Want? If you have knotty pine cabinets and country decor everywhere, sleek European chrome handles would look out of place on your cabinets. If you have a minimalist ultramodern kitchen, then cast-iron or flower-shaped knobs would just look silly. It's important to consider your overall decorating goals when it comes to choosing hardware. Even if you love the warm look of bronze, if the rest of your kitchen is decorated in cool white and blue tones, a cool-toned metal such as silver or pewter may look better.
- How Much Do You Want to Replace? If you had nickel hinges and knobs and you are switching to bronze, or if your hinges were gold-colored and you're replacing them with stainless steel to match your appliances, then it would look best to replace your current hinges with hinges in the same metal and tone as the handles or knobs. If your hinges are hidden, this is not as important, but if they are visible, it's definitely important to consider.
- Why Are You Refacing? Are you dressing up your house to sell it, or are you making changes because you've found your dream home and you want to live in it as long as possible? If you're selling your home, then you may want to choose knobs or handles that match the rest of your kitchen decor and are as neutral in style as possible. After all, something terribly unique may not appeal to the people looking at your home with an eye to buying it. However, if you love your home and refacing your kitchen cabinets is just one improvement, then you can choose whatever kind of knobs or handles most appeal to you, without worrying about how unique or unusual they might be.
There are hundred of styles to choose from when it comes to updating your kitchen cabinet hardware. The choices can seem overwhelming, so take your time and choose something that truly appeals to you. You are more likely to love the look and enjoy your kitchen for years come. Sources:
