Understanding Quartz and Granite Countertop Materials

A new kitchen countertop can add the finishing touch to a kitchen with newly refaced cabinets. Try adding a rich black granite countertop to cabinets with newly refaced white doors and drawers, for example. The results can be a stunning new look.

Before selecting a countertop material, however, consider the pros and cons of each. Here's a look at two perennial favorites -- quartz and granite countertops.

Granite Countertops are a Hot Trend

Granite countertops have been a hot seller in recent years because they add a rich sophisticated look to any kitchen design. These natural stone countertops also:
  • Add a nice contrast when used with stainless steel appliances.
  • Are highly heat resistant. You can put a hot pot directly on the countertop.
  • Are easy to clean.

Granite blends well with refaced cabinets in a variety of materials, including:
  • Oak
  • Maple
  • Cherry woods

Granite countertops also are porous, however, and can stain. To avoid stains, make sure you seal the stone regularly. It also pays to go visit the fabricator and select your countertop personally. That way you can ensure that it has the texture and look you want.

Quartz Countertops Offer Granite Alternative

Quartz countertops also have become a popular item, as they offer the look of granite with fewer maintenance requirements. Quartz is a man-made product and is available in a wide range of colors, including:
  • Blue and sage patterns
  • Black and brown tones
  • Cream and white colors

When planning a cabinet refacing project, consider the look you are trying to achieve. Realize that:
  • Granite countertops offer a rich look, but are more porous than quartz.
  • Quartz is more durable than granite, but is not as natural looking.

As you plan your cabinet refacing project, look around at the various colors and patterns of quartz and granite countertops. Then compare your top choices with the look of your refaced cabinets. The finished product can be a dramatic new look for your kitchen design.
