The kitchen countertop can make an important statement as part of your kitchen design. All it takes is a little creativity to make this area really stand out.

Decorative Countertop Edges

A new kitchen countertop can provide the perfect complement to your newly refaced kitchen. As you decide which material, color and pattern to use, look for ways to make the countertop unique. Aside from the pattern and color, look for decorative edge treatments, such as:
  • A beveled edge that add a sophisticated design.
  • A rounded or square countertop edge, which can blend with molding treatments in your kitchen design.
  • An integral backsplash. This is popular with granite countertops, as it allows you to carry the stone look several inches up the wall.
  • In a solid surface countertop, add a stripe in a contrasting color in the sink and along the countertop edge.

Add Texture With Countertop Patterns

There are several countertop patterns that can add texture to a kitchen design. A quartz countertop with a leather pattern or a laminate countertop with stone indentations are just two examples. These types of countertop patterns can blend with wall or floor tile or add a contrast against smooth faucet and tile finishes.

Choose Countertop Material Wisely

There are several popular kitchen countertop materials on the market -- from upscale granite to seamless solid surface or economical laminate. Each has its own benefits and characteristics. When choosing a countertop material, think about:
  • Your lifestyle -- if you want a high-end kitchen design for entertaining, then a granite countertop is a good choice. It has a rich, upscale look and is a great cooking surface. If you want a kid-friendly countertop that is economical, than try a laminate countertop.
  • Your color scheme -- granite countertops have natural flecks. There also are laminate countertops with stone patterns. Or, if you want a smoother color or pattern try a solid surface or quartz countertop.

As you coordinate your cabinet refacing and countertop purchase, look for ways to make a statement and enhance your kitchen design.
