If your budget is tight, don't worry. There are plenty of ways to update your kitchen design without breaking the bank. These also are projects that can work well with cabinet refacing.

Add Decorative Kitchen Wall Tile

Kitchen wall tile can turn an ordinary kitchen into a designer's showcase. When combined with newly refaced cabinets, the look can be dramatic. As you debate which cabinet refacing options to select, look for wall tile that can:
  • Bring a boost of color to your kitchen design.
  • Add the rich texture of natural stone.
  • Accent a commercial oven or large vent hood.

The cost can range from $250 to $750 or more, depending on the wall tile material, size and pattern. When sticking to a small budget try:
  • Using inexpensive, neutral wall tile for most of the area, then splurging on pricier accent tiles.
  • Pick one small area as a focal point and add trendy glass or metal wall tile in an unusual pattern.
  • Add tile on an angle for added interest.

Spice Up Storage Options

Kitchen storage does not have to be boring. For a few hundred dollars, you can add decorative flair to kitchen cabinets, shelves and other storage areas. Here's how:
  • When refacing kitchen cabinets, pick a few that will be used for open storage. Remove the cabinet door and add a decorative curtain.
  • Add a baker's rack with a long curtain; add decorative roping to partially tie back the curtain.
  • Add roll out drawers in your newly refaced cabinets. This type of system is ideal for storing pots and pans.

Change Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

Cabinet hardware is another inexpensive change that can make a world of difference to your kitchen design. Look for metal tones that will blend with other accents around the kitchen, such as lighting, door hardware and appliance handles.

There are many ways to update a kitchen design on a small budget. The trick is to select a few key areas and get creative.
