When you say the word "laminate" many people instantly think of the kitchen countertop, as this durable and economical material has been a mainstay in the kitchen for years. There are many other uses for laminates, however. As you plan a cabinet refacing, look around the house for ways to incorporate this decorative material.

Laminates Enhance Kitchen Design

Laminate countertops are sold in a wide variety of colors and patterns, with earth patterns and greens, blues and beiges often leading the way. When planning a cabinet refacing, consider adding a new laminate countertop, then carrying the look into these areas:
  • A breakfast bar. By adding a breakfast bar at one end of your kitchen you can enhance the kitchen design and expand your seating capacity. You'll need at least five feet in width and a couple of feet in depth at minimum.
  • A built in desk. Many homes have desk or computer areas in or near the kitchen. Instead of using an old wooden desk, try adding a durable laminate countertop to blend with your cabinet refacing choices and your overall kitchen design.
  • The laundry room, which often is on the first floor near the kitchen. A laminate countertop can make a good surface for folding clothes.

Flexible Room Options

As home owners focus on creating rooms with multiple uses, laminates play a big part in the room design. The laundry room can become a craft or hobby room, for example, with the same laminate countertop used for creating artwork. Among the other flexible spaces are:
  • Family rooms, which double as homework stations, television watching rooms and computer areas.
  • Snack bar areas, which add interest to any kitchen design.

Garage Options

Laminates also are popular in the garage, as they add a durable surface for storing:
  • Tools, paints and other supplies.
  • Gardening equipment and supplies.
  • Motor oil, fuel filters and other auto materials.

Laminates offer a versatile option for those who want to spruce up various parts of the home. Try adding them in a few select places while completing a cabinet refacing. You'll see a dramatic change in a large part of your home.
